Question Any good advice on fishing the Louisiana flats?

I have recently moved to New Orleans from Harriman TN and have no saltwater experience. I have been to the local fly shop (uptown anglers) and talked to one of the employs and got some advice but I still donít know much. Needless to say going from the streams of the smokys to the flats of Louisiana has left me clueless. If anybody has any good advice it would help me out a lot!
    Thanks

I to love the flats down there. The best advise I would say is hire a guide. That is the best way to see the area and ask questions. Typically I use an 8wt rod loaded with a bass taper floating line. This seams to help when the wind is blowing. Practice precise shots, I have found if I put it right on their nose they take but leading them several feet not as easy. Gold spoon flies and if the water is right poppers. I usually look at them the same as I was bass fishing and think of it like that. That seems to keep me from over thinking and takes the edge off of worrying about knowing what to do. When they hit set hard cause they have very hard parts in their mouth. Reds are the fire down below and you will be hooked for life. Just my 2 cents.

With you not having any saltwater experience. Go out and get a good guide to fish with for your first time out. Ask lots of questions. The information he can give you is priceless. It will be a big confidence boost the next time you go out by yourself.

Hiring a guide is always a good move.

Another option is to get involved with a ff club. I fished a couple of weeks ago out in the Biloxi marsh with Tom D from the Mobile club. See below (30# on the big boga!)...

    Nice Fish Kent,

Did you catch him on a Stealth? It was good to see you a couple of weeks ago. I talked to Rick the other day. Sounds like TFO is doing well in December. Looks like you are doing well too! Wanna trade jobs?

    Troutholic,

I have never fished for redfish in Louisiana but I know plenty of people who have. Tie up some copperheads and try them.

No, Byron, not on a SB. Big 3/0 splayed hackle kwan-ish things in orange & gold.

But I'm not sure it mattered. Those fish were big, dumb & hungry (my favorite knid)!

I love big, dumb, hungry redfish. I only catch dumb, hungry and small redfish compared to yours.
