    Default catchin' gills

Well after church Sunday my son and I went out for a bit. We found the bull gills bedded up with some redear as well. I shared the fly rod with my son. He caught these all by himself. Black wooly buggers are good on sunfish as well.....

That is awesome. Thanks for sharing the outdoors and church with this young fellow. As these years goes by he will draw strength from both. I still remember catching gills with my dad and uncle.

Great pictures and what a smile! My Dad did the same for me. He set the example, had me in church, taught me to hunt and fish. Back in the late 50's we made our own dough to fish for carp and red horse, Dug our own worms and later took up bass fishing. We had many good outings quail hunting and fishing. We lost my Dad in March and I treasure each memory. Make all the memories you can with your children. You won't regret it. They will never forget!

That brings back some great memories for me too! My Dad and I used to go fly fishing for bluegill, using live crickets, and the sight of them jumping plum out of the water was thrilling! It still is! We caught lots of them every time out.

I've taken up fly fishing again, after 45 years and my recent retirement, and like to go to the lake and fish for bluegill when the trout fishing isn't good (also, my wife prefers that to the mountains). Any hints on how good the bluegill fishing is right now, where to go, and what they're hitting? I only use artificial flies now, and prefer top water flies, although I'll use anything. Thanks in advace for any hints you folks have for a newbie. Right now I'm land locked, but plan to buy a boat soon.

I just walk the bank with my polarized glasses and look for beds. They can be hard to spot at first, but I sneak around and look for underwater disturbances/waves (from the big boys fighting off the little ones), under shady spots or just remember where the beds are from the last year! Then I tie on a fly and have fun. And what they hit, depends on a lot of factors. Most likely a bluegill will hit anything!

Thanks for the tips, jross. I forgot to mention I live 5 minutes from Ft. Loudon Lake, near Northshore and Pellissippi. If anyone knows any good locations for fishing for bluegill from the bank I (and my wife) would appreciate suggestions. I know about The Cove...didn't hit it till July last year, so it may have been slow then, maybe better now. BTW, I did catch an 11" lake trout at The Cove on a bluegill popper...must have wandered up from Tellico.

I truly love hearing about and talking to folks who fish with their paps.
Fishing truly is one of the best and most enjoyable things I have ever been able to experience w/ my father. It is great. We too have spent many a Sunday up at Church early and on the river before 3. What a Blessing.

That is an interesting little booger there. What is the name if that material that you tied for legs. I want to get into fishing more for bluegills and I need to equip my arsenal a little more.

    Thanks
    Zack
