    Default Nantahala

I've got a relative who hopes to get her first flyrod this weekend. She spins fishes, but has no experience with a fly. She loves the Nantahala area, and wants to know where to fish it for trout. I have no experience with the area. Where would you suggest she go? Figure she has little wading experience. Any help would be appreciated. If she can get that first trout on a fly, I figure she will be hooked for life.

I would go to the delayed harvest area.

Fish the riffles and pocket water with a bead head nymph.

The last time I went up there, that was the most productive.

Ok, so where is the delayed harvest area? I searched on the NC wildlife site and it said the DH was from Whiteoak to the powerhouse, but I could not find a map such as the TWRA provides. Google earth for Whiteoak NC put me near the coast. Also what is the name of the powerhouse, so a generation schedule can be obtained? thanks for the help. Heck she lives in Cleveland TN. I'm trying to convince her to just boogey over to the Tellico area.

There's no release on the upper section of the Nantahala.

Take Hwy 74/19 west from Bryson City about 15 miles to the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Fly shop on your left. Go another 8 miles and turn left on Wayah Road. The DH section starts at the powerhouse and goes 4 miles up stream to White Oak.

And if you're coming from TN on 74/19, go a mile or so past Hwy 129 (road to Robbinsville) and turn right on Wayah Road.

Since she's in Cleveland...where I grew up, she ought to try your suggestion (Tellico) which is only an hour (at most) away. Specifically, I would suggest the North River since its pretty easy to wade and you won't have the competition that you have on the main river. Another option would be to go fish the Hiwassee. She could be at Webb's Store in Reliance in 30 minutes or less. Heck, you can fish right there at the store. My dad, brother and I fished the Nantahalla earlier this year. We camped at Nelson's Nantahalla Hideaway Campground...just a few minutes away from the powerhouse. We couldn't quite figure out the hatch but we did catch some nice sized brookies. It's an easy stream to fish (above the powerhouse) since there's a road that pretty much runs right along the river. Below the powerhouse you're going to have to deal with generation schedule...it was running just about all day when we were there this spring so that section was not a section a novice should try...we didn't fish it much since the push was pretty signicant. All in all, I wasn't as impressed with the Nanty as I thought I would be. It's easy to cover the DH section pretty quickly and you can't really fish below the powerhouse since they cater to the rafters (with there generation schedule).

Yep. That's what I have suggested to her. They just got back from the Hiwasee acouple of weeks ago spin fishing. She just likes the Nantahala and would like to fish it while they are there. She's got to learn to cast first, and I am suggesting she learn on a pond for some gills before she tackles moving water.
