    Thumbs up August 29th and 30th Reds in Beaufort

    Went fishing on Saturday afternoon. The tide was only a 7 footer (uncorrected). We saw several fish and I saw a beautiful red tailing from about 150 yards away. Got over there as quickly as I could and when I got within casting range started stalking the fish. After a couple of casts I finally put my crab pattern fly in front of the fish and he hammered it. Had him on for a couple of seconds and he broke me off. Saw several other fish, but didn't get a chance to cast to any.

    Decided to try another spot on Sunday, with a little higher tide, 7.1 (uncorrected). The wind was blowing the water in and the fish were coming with it. I caught 3 Redfish in about 20 minutes from 22-24 inches long. I then managed to break the 4th off (that is what I get for not retying the fly after catching 3), retied and broke another off. I think that I must have nicked the leader on an oyster rake or something. Anyway long story short the 3 new crab patterns that I tied are now gone, and I caught another 3 fish. This pattern has proven itself to me. If I got the fly in front of the fish, they took it. Here are the pictures:



    I got my buddy Larry to take the first picture. The next two pictures I had to take myself because Larry was busy chasing tailing fish. He only hooked into one fish, and ended up loosing it. The wind was really up and it was tough to get the fly in front of the fish. He was using one of my crab pattern flies as well (you can see my post under general fly tying)





    I have been having a great time this summer catching reds, but I have really been missing the mountains and trout fishing.

    Default I don't know about that.

    Appreciate the compliment but I think that I have just been persistent and lucky. The best thing is that I have learned a great amount about what to look for in a summer time tailing area. It should serve me well in the future.
