    Smile Broke my slump

I have recently had a slump fishing for Reds. The water has been extremely high and has come in fast for the last several weekends. Today I finally broke it. I cast to a fish within minutes of getting out today, great cast in front of the fish, moved the fly just right, and he hammered it......then broke me off. My fishing partner Larry had fish all around him, but couldn't get a fish to bite, and then....

He landed a nice 22.5 inch red caught on one of my crab pattern flies.

I cast to a couple of other fish, and had one hit that I missed. Then as we were walking and working our way back out, I saw a fish tailing about 150 yards away. I moved out and got close enough. He really made me work, he was rooting hard and wouldn't pay any attention to my fly...but I finally got it in the right spot and he was on.

It was a beautiful 26.5" redfish. Barry I hope you like the pose!

Default Update with photos from 09272009

Went back out on Sunday with my Fishing partner Larry, and another member of our SIFF club and friend Brian. The fish were all over but they just were not eathing the fly. I watched Larry for 30 minutes as he cast to probably 5 different fish, from the same spot in every direction around him. Brian was working a fish so hard, and could not get it to hit, so he decided to put it right in front of the Red's nose.....He ended up hitting it right on the head. That was a nice fish, and the explosion as it left at light speed after getting clocked one was fun to watch.

Here is Larry working a fish:

I finally managed to get a decent cast into the wind to a nice fish and:

It was a nice 22.5" Red caught on one of my spoon flies.

I actually ended up keeping this fish. It is the first fish I have kept this year (my wife was threatening to not let me go fishing any more if I did not at least bring her home a meal!).

If there was any doubt about what these fish are doing in the flats, the next picture should answer the question:

All out of one fish, all fiddlers. I did manage to find one blue crab claw farther down its intestinal tract.

    Barry,
Thanks for the information. That has a real similar look to the crab pattern I tie. I like the copper colored body. I will definately try and tie some up.

I think that one of the reasons I have broken off so many fish this summer is how hard they hit a crab pattern (I have broken off about 10 fish with 20lb test). Here is my crab pattern, and they slam it too!

Nice looking bug, I tell ya as hard as they hit and strong as the pull it always amazes me when i get up and the fly just drops out?? Gotta keep that pressure on em big time. Some of those fish you have stuck are really big I can see how they would be able to break you off!
