Default Looking for thoughts on 10 ft rods

I am currently thinking about purchasing my first 10 foot rod. I have never owned one this long and was wanting to know if any of you have any opinions or experience with such rods. I am looking at the 5wt line of rods.

i really like 10 ft rods . i have a loomis in fr1205 in glx 2 pieces and a fr1204 in imx. and still lookin for a 4 piece in 4 or 5 wt simular to these but can not find any any brand. the g loomis glx old series in 10 ft 2 pieces is the finest out, extremely hard to find !!! searched e bay for over 3yrs lookin for a 10 ft 4 wt. glx. when you find one you will never let it go.

g loomis has just introduced a 10 ft 3 wt, and 4 wt. for 2010 but can not find one to test cast . i want it to be like the old glx. if so i will buy.

tryed the sage z axis in 10 ft 5 and 11ft. 5 and sokd them both wasn't near as good as the glx

Billyspey, what were the applications you were using the 10 footers for? I am looking for longer cast out of pontoon boats and wading big water.

I have heard of people using 10 ft rods in the mountains. I just cant see being able to do that. On a 10 ft rod do you try to look at faster actions or do you stay with the same actions you like in shorter rods?

test cast before you buy, don;t go on what other think find the action you prefer. for me i like light fast action rods , my experience has been ,in a given rod a 10 ft will be slower than a 9 ft of the same rod for instance a sage xp in 4 wt my favorite 490-4 is faster than a 4100-4 . i bought a scott 10ft. 4 wt. without test cast and hated it as soon as i put it together . so i sold it without fishing it had a very clumsy feel .

The 10' rods are way slower and def test cast one before you buy.

Billspey, the Scott was designed more for the US Fly Fishing Team, Czech nymphing mostly, so the taper is unique among other 10' rods and is way slower with the weight of the extra foot, hence the 'clumsy' feel if you're used to a 9 footer.

    Default Hardy/Greys

I have just concluded a ton of research on 10 foot rods. I have been looking on and off for years for a medium action, 4 or 5 piece, 4 wt. rod. I use a long rod for fishing the Smokies unless I am on a really small stream like Jakes creek or Collins creek. The one I have settled on is a Hardy/Greys Streamflex 10 foot, 4 weight. Daniel from Little River Outffiters is ordering me one as they are dealers for Hardy.
