Default What rod for a 7 year old?

My grandson has asked if he is old enough to go fly fishing with Granddad. I think he is so I am now in the process of putting together an outfit for him for his birthday. My question is what type of rod is best to start a youngster out with? I want to have a rod that I can teach him the right way to get started. What are some of your thoughts on length of rod and action?

I spend a lot of time in the Smokies so that is where he has seen me fly fishing.

I have 3 kids. One now 9, one 7, one 3. About 2 years ago my nephew got a line on some TLS rods from Orvis and I decided to get each kid a flyrod for themselves. I went with a 3wt tip flex 8.5'. I was advised that tip flexs are best for younger kids. Not sure exactly why other than they are quicker, but I can say that my 7 and 9 year olds have been using them on our pond in the back for 2 summers now. My 9 year old got it right away. The 7 year old is still working out the kinks but he is close. They both are catching fish. I honesty think the difference is my 9 year old is a girl and she pays attention a little better and is more willing to acknowledge that she doesn't know it all already. But anyway back to your question 3wt tip flex work out real well for us and it is a rod they can use for the rest of their lives.
