    Default Bears on Hazel Creek

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet but......

I received word this morning (06/24/10) that the Bone Valley and Sugar Fork campsites (83 and 84) are closed due to "aggressive bear activity". Proctor, Sawdust and Calhoun remain open.

I have no idea how long the closure will remain in effect.

Does that mean there have been excessive sightings or someone was actually "threatened" by a bear or there was some time of "bear related incident" other than just a sighting? I also see that #39 is on the warning list, I was there just a few weeks ago.

ifish4wildtrout - I don't think that sighting are justification enough for closure. Pretty sure there has to be some sort of aggressiveness by the bear.

On our last visit Bone Valley my wife and I had a big bear meet us on the bridge in front of the campsite. We were the only people at that site for two nights and never saw the bear again. Our biggest problem was getting the coyotes to hush. Both nights one sat down and started howling within 50 yards of the tent.

I was up there this weekend. No bear sightings but campsites (83 and 84) are still closed. Lots of fisherman with many getting skunked. I caught a baker's dozen on Saturday but quit fishing about 1:00 p.m. due to the scorching temps.....went back to camp and soaked in the creek. I have been going to Hazel Creek for 30 years but never in June. Now I know why....way too crowded and hot.

The Park Service held Decoration Day Sunday with dinner on the grounds at Bone Valley. I'm sure the bears will be in there this week with all the food odors left behind.

    Be safe and stay cool.
