    Default Fly Line Question

Found a spool that I thought I had been missing in my basement last night. It has some of the good Rio 6 weight line on it. Problem is that I haven't used this spool for about five years now. But the line has only been fished a total of 10 days at most. Haven't taken the cleaner to it yet. Is the line likely still good to use after being coiled up on a spool for that long?

It should be fine. Kept in steady moderate temps without UV exposure. I've got lines older than that that seem fine. Just take it out and stretch it well and give it an inspection. regards, Silvercreek

I believe that Silvercreek is "dead on." I have some fly lines that are at least 15years old and they work fine. You do need to stretch the lines to take out the memory set of the line.

I'm no line expert, but I would think that dirt, grime, physical damage and UV are probably the great enemies of lines.

I'd string up and go fish!

I had a spool of the original Cortland 333 (anyone remember that?). D weight (7 wt. now) and was in good condition. I got tired of it and threw it away after about 45 years. Wish I had it back. Keep your line out of the UV rays, keep it clean, dry it after each use, and watch out for stuff as sunscreen, etc.

It's probably totally shot and completely useless for anything other than tying up tomato plants. How about just sending it to me. I'll take care of proper disposal for you (on one of my reels of course).

Seriously, it should be just fine.
