    Default Book Recommendations

What is your opinion on the best books on Park fishing, history, camping, etc. ?? I have no books on the Park yet (other than Last Train to Elkmont) and want to get some more books. What should be my first choices?

Hazel Creek Then And Now is a good one and so is a book by Wiley Oakly the title of which eludes me.Chris Camuto wrote an excellent book on the failed Red Wolf re-introduction program that helped me figure out what the fenced in areas were that I came across way up Thunderhead Prong in the early 90's.

My favorite book about the region is On The Spine Of Time and my favorite old Smoky Mtn. character is Dan Lawson who once haunted the ridges and balds above Cades Cove.

I thought Jim Casada's book on the park was good. It had a good mix of history and fishing.

Jim's and Ian's books are both great. I would definitely get both of those if you don't have them.

They have both been very willing to give insight and share their knowledge through emails with me in the past. I am appreciative to both of them.

Shaggy--In addition to books already mentioned, you might want to consider Michael Frome's Strangers in High Places, Jim Gasque's Hunting & Fishing in the Great Smokies (recently reprinted), Ken Wise"s Hiking Trails of the GSMNP if you can find it--it"s out of print and scarce but is far and away the best book on Park trails). Hattie Caldwell Davis's books on Cataloochee, Lanche Holland's Fontana, and that is just a start. If you are a serious reader there's a 20 or 30 page annotated bibliography in my Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park: An Insider's Guide to a Pursuit of Passion, which will give you a much fuller guide to the literature on the region.

My opinions on the best books in categories....
General History of the Park: The Wild East by Margaret Lynn Brown
Comprehensive History of the Area: Strangers in High Places by Michael Frome
Cades Cove Specific History: Cades Cove by Durwood Dunn
Fishing Specific: Jim Casada's Fly Fishing in the GSMNP
Hiking & Camping: Hiking Trails of the Great Smoky Mountains by Ken Wise

Yeah, I haven't read Mr. Casada's yet, so I couldn't recommend it in good conscience, but he does know what he's doin'!!!

Thanks for all of the input. I have some good reading to do! I will start with Jim's book and the Anglers Companion and go from there!
