    Default Stoneflies????

Was thinking about the tailwaters today and was wondering, are there any stoneflies on the Clinch or Caney?

Just didn't know if this was mainly a freestone bug or what.

It's a freestone bug in these parts, however there used to be a large population of little black stones on the Clinch, but they disappeared about 10 years ago. The fish hated them, and I never saw the first fish eat one, nor did I find any nymphs in a fishes stomach. Other then those I have never seen nor has John Thurman ever collected any stonefly nymphs in the clinch. He has done extensive benthic work on the Clinch over the years. TVA biologists have also not reported any in the last 10+ years, and back then it was just the little black ones and none of the other species.

The Holston has none, and I can only assume the Caney falls in with the Clinch and Holston.

    Thanks for the info. Waterwolf.

Thought that might be the case, just wasn't sure.

I have seen one little green stonefly on the Clinch. I would think that fishing a stonefly pattern on the Clinch would be a real long shot.

The Caney had a sporadic little black stone hatch several springs ago. We used a black pheasant tail or hares ear and had limited success. Not worth wasting any time over, IMO. This was in the first 7 miles or so....
