    Default Well hooked fish

What is the best way to deal with an extremely well hooked fish? Should you just clip the line and leave the fly in its mouth or do your best to try and remove it?

I'm talking about fish with the fly well down in their mouth. Every now and then I forget to flatten the barb on a green weenie or BHPT and get in this situation.

If it's of legal size, throw it up on the bank and have it for supper.

The last one I hooked like that died. It was an under 7 inch brook and I really tried to save him, he did not make it.

The last two rainbows I hooked like that died as well while I tried to save them. I fried those two beasts.

I guess the best thing would be to cut the line, I really hate that I killed that little brook a few weeks ago.

The best thing to do is simply cut the line as close to the hook as possible. ANY attempt at retrieving a deep hook will usually result in a dead fish. I have seen multiple fish with line coming out of their cloaca (fancy name for butt hole). In fact this year I even pulled a neversink caddis from the bum of a rainbow up on the WPLP. In almost all cases a fish will pass a hook withing a day or two completely un harmed.

Put your foot on it's head and jerk the line really hard It will come out
