    Default stupid question

    Guys,
One of my buddies has a brother in Johnson City. In July we're going fishing there. What river is it that is in JC?

I usually fish in the park and have never fished in any of the area tailwaters.

    thanks,
    Jeff

Wautauga, South Holston, Doe River; for brook trout, fish Hampton Creek, east of Roan Mtn SP. Get the regulations book and read it; special regulations for the Wautauga. Good luck! Let us know how the trip turned out.

My father always said the only stupid question was the one not asked.

I feel the same way...Never be afraid to ask a question.

I would hit up the South Holston for sure!

I'm from Elizabethton, and usually fish the Watauga when I'm there. What part of Doe River are you referring to? the part in Roan Mtn S.P.?

Mundele, I haven't have the joy of fishing the Doe River but have seen some places that might be accessible. It goes through a park if I remember. Also, I stopped at a little church across from a vacant factory. Looked accesible from there if law allows. I do have the three on my list for this summer.

I have fished the Doe pretty much from the Roan Mountain State Park Visitor's Center upstream through the park and campground, and some distance above the campground. It's mostly rainbows and browns below the campground, but I've heard that there are brookies in the upper reaches. Unfortunately we didn't catch any brookies the two times we've been up there.

On the other hand, it's hard to beat the South Holston if you're in the area when any hatches are coming off. It's definitely worth considering. As for the Watauga, there aren't many good access points for wading, IMHO. Given a choice between the South Holston and the Watauga, I think I'd pick the SoHo everytime.

Fly fishing - it's cheaper than a bass boat!

Thanks guys. We're going in July sometime. My buddie's brother lives there so I'm not sure which river. He knows them so wherever it is, I'll just be along for the ride until we get started fishing.

I assume these tailwaters are like most others, lots of midges small flies?

When fishing the SH, make sure you clean your stuff to prevent didymo from spreading. I fished there 3/26 and went through all my stuff, either cleaning it (boots with felt soles) or drying. Haven't fished since ( I'm getting the shakes) so everything should be very dry.

Knothead is correct in that there is didymo in the Soho, and to clean your gear well.

The Soho is awesome, especially when the sulfurs are hatching. As others have said take midges also, but plenty of sulfur emergers and dries. You can wear your arm out.

The Watauga is ok, but there are limited points to wade. My wife & I have had limited success on it.
