    Default Montana Streams

I am going to Montana next weekend to begin a new therapy for Parkinsons that is available in Louisville, Ky as the closest point to Knoxville. I have relatives in Great Falls that I will be staying with while I do the month long therapy (4 days a week). I am going to take as much advantage of this opportunity as I can to flyfish as possible , but will be limited somewhat with transportation , etc..... Does anyone have any knowledge of the following streams as to good fishing areas , wading access, etc......
Big Spring Creek - Lewistown, Mt
Wolf Creek - North of Helena
Sun river - west of Great Falls

Thanks for any and all help

    Mike

I've done some research on these streams, and Big Spring Creek is not affected by the runoff. I think the Sun would be , but Wolf creek is not affected till June.

The Missouri River should be fishing fine. If it is high it is best floated. Craig, Montana has three fly shops and offers boat rentals as well as guide services. If you have never floated the Missouri you owe it to yourself to do so. The fish are often big and strong.

Yeah, thanks for the headsup on the Missouri . I had checked their websites and it looks like the fishing I will be doing is wading very carefully where I can. I've been "reminded" that this is a trip for getting therapy for the PD and not a fishing trip where I spend the medical budget on fishing and that's OK. I'll be happy just being there throwing a fly.

The Missouri would be a great choice. I can remember that around a flow of 4,000 cfs, that there is good wading water on the upper end, which by the way, is where I would go. Hint.

g022271 if the flows of the Missouri are reasonable you should be able to get some good wade fishing near the dam. Simply drive across the river at Craig and park as close to the dam as you can. It is fairly easy walking but is a little walk to the dam. I don't know what will be hatching but small nymphs are always in style. Black or red Zebra midges size 18, czech nymphs and my favorite a purple firefly can be effective. The folks at the fly shops are very helpful. Best of luck and let us know how you did.
