    Default RMNP Small Stream 8/11/2013

Flows are down to fishable levels after a healthy runoff earlier this summer. I've started fishing small streams a lot more lately. Dry flies have been the name of the game on just about every stream I've fished. This particular stream has fished well with Parachute Adams so I haven't seen the need to try much else.

Lots of brookies came to hand on this particular trip. I fished until the big fish quit responding and I figured I was fishing used water. Further down the drainage I managed one brown and one cutthroat for the hat trick.

    Here are a few pictures.

    The stream.

The brookies are starting to color up for fall!!!

The nice brown. He came out from under a dark rock ledge after I had fished the whole pool and was wondering where all the fish were. At first I thought I had a monster brookie on...

My surprise cutthroat! I was not expecting this fish since they are not found this low in the drainage in any numbers. It was a nice way to wrap up the day.

    Parting stream shot...

No, I've been carrying a DSLR on the stream with me for a while now. I've had some close calls and ruined one on the Caney a couple of years ago when my canoe flipped... I've been thinking seriously about getting another waterproof point and shoot though 'cause the big camera is a pain to lug around everywhere...

    Default Water Levels?

Hi David, how are the water levels holding out the last week or so? I'm headed to Fort Collins on the 5th and plan on fishing the Poudre and Big Thompson rivers, as well as some fishing in the Park. I'm hoping the water levels won't be as low as last year...

Pete, things have been pretty good until just recently. The last week or so has been HOT. We had an unusually cool summer prior to that though so most waters are still in decent shape. Flows up high are still great but enough water is coming out of the creeks as they approach the plains that the lower reaches of some streams are getting pretty skinny. Overall things are still better than last year at this time and we may be getting some more monsoon moisture over the next few days so that may help as well. If you are staying up high you'll be fine...

    David,
Nice post indeed! Great to see some Western small stream reports and see that not everyone fishes just the big, famous Western streams.
Keep up the fine photography as well.
