Default My first GSMNP Grand Slam

The plan today was to check the area above Metcalf. Brownie and I were out scoping out the brown territory getting ready for the fall. We caught a few rainbows and I caught a small brown. After all the excitement at noon (check back for that report tomorrow when Brownie loads up the pictures) we decided to leave on a good note. I headed back to Townsend to grab something to eat and started thinking that all I needed for my Grand Slam was a brookie. A quick drive up to Tremont and a steady fast paced walk got me in Brookie waters. 2 casts in and I finally got my Slam.

First I got my rainbow. Not much of a surprise to get one of those.

Then I got a little brown. I've only caught 2 browns in the park so this alone for me was exciting.

Sorry for the blurry pictures but I was exhausted from my almost sprint to the second crossing of Sam's Creek and I didn't realize the focus was out of whack.

Today was amazing day in the park. The Grand Slam was only half the story.

    Congrats on the slam!

Tie those san wuan worms up like green weenies and I think you'll have better results I'm not sure of it's that added length of the san juan worm (where fish grab back of fly not hook), or if the fluttering tail of the weenie that is key (just can't resist some "good tail").

Nathan I could see you hiking 8+ miles starting in the afternoon, but I think it might just kill Joel. Less than 2 miles sure beats 8. I would just drive up 441 for some roadside action if 1 fish was all I was after.

And Brownie, you have gotten great advice and help from LRO members and even gotten to fish with several. If that's not enough of a reason to post us a trip report ASAP, I can think of 22 other reasons

I think your right. 8 miles would kill me. I'm reserving that run for an overnight. I shot over to the Oconaluftee earlier this year to try for a single stream slam but the browns where hiding well.

I wasn't really going for the slam but I had to finish it especially after the crazy amazing day we were already having. I knew there would be at least 1 brookie at Sam's that would take a fly so I was going for the sure thing. I found 5 brookies that were willing and I only fished about 50 feet of the stream. I bet a day at Sam's would have been amazing.

As for the san waun worm. I usually run a barbie bug. The could of rainbows and the small brown took that fly but I had one of Browies magic worms in my pack and thought I would try it out on brookies. They liked which is no surprise.

So it looks like now I have to get a single stream slam and according to Josh Pheiffer I need to get an ultimate slam and run down and bag a smallie too.

I said wrong about the barbie bug and the brown. I lost my last barbie bug to a rock or something under the water. I had a pink san waun in the pack and used it and caught the little brown. Back to the vise to tie more barbie bugs.

I just mean for the next challenge... For a first slam, I totally would have done the same thing...
