Post Fly Tying - The Clinch River "Root Beer Midge"

Mr. Kirk has a nice layout of my Clinch River "Root Beer Midge" in his latest edition of Southern Trout Magazine. This pattern is very effective this time of the year on the Clinch River if you are looking for something different.

    Oct/Nov STM Up
The Oct/Nov of Southern Trout is up at www.southerntrout.com. It hit the 200 page mark, a goal we set from the beginning. If you go there, be sure to sign up for the G.Loomis fly rod to be given away in Nov. Our designer is getting better and better. Very proud of this issue.

    Default root beer midge

looks like one I'll tie, couple questions:
    no larger than a #20 ?
    smallest size ?
would you use clear goo to cover the thorax ?
bonus question, the beads are turned end to end, similar to a two bit hooker, yes ?

I tie them in #16-18 most of the time.
    smallest size ?
    Probably a #20

You could try it. I like to add one coat of Hard as Nails to create the illusion of the head and thorax being joined. Clear Goo may be a little too bulky...(?) Give it a try and see how it works.

    Not sure about that...
