Question Rod size for my little girl?

    Good day to all.

My little girl is 4 years old and she likes to watch me fish. I think it is time for her to learn how to cast and would like any comments on rod size for her to make learning the cast fun? I have 3 wt and a 5 wt rod. Thanks for your help.

I started both of mine on a 7' 2wt. It was the old Orvis Rocky Mountain version. They picked it up quickly and moved to an 8'6" 4wt the following Spring and have fished it every since. That's been ten years now.

My daughter was about 3.5 to 4 and my son started when he was about 5. My dad attempted to teach us growing up, but only two of the four kept to it. I learned when I was about 4 or 5 as well, fishing in the Smokies, Cherokee, NC and around Maggie Valley.

Thanks for the information. Would you be willing to answer more questions in the future on teaching her how to fish?

I actually started my son just short of his 4th bday....I took the upper half of an old fiberglass 8.5 footer and made a one piece rod for him by cutting off the lower half and fitting the tip into the handle....after some yard fishing I turned him loose on Jakes Creek in Elkmont and watched him flail away....didn't have to worry about damaging the rod and he didn't have to worry about casting too far....rod could actually cast about 20' of line....my son would dabble between flyrods and spinners for a while and then the bug hit him.....he has already claimed my favorite brookie rod for his own and is eyeing several others.....may have to buy a gun safe

What are some good creeks to let her learn in?

Thanks to everyone for the information. We are blessed to have such a great resource with this board and LRO.

If you're in the park, I would recommend Elkmont. It's close to the campground and road, plus, there is enough open area for casting, especially for a beginner.

I started my kids on an 8 ft 4wt. at about 10 years old. It is a med/fast rod and I have it overlined with a 5wt DT line. It loads faster so they can feel the line bending the rod. We went through the flailing phase and still working on it with my daughter. I started them on calm water because of worries of currents sweeping them off their feet. There are several wide open areas on the LR in and out of the park. Nothing is more frustrating to them than constantly hanging up in tree limbs or bankside grasses. A nice pond or cove at the lake usually provides instant gratification by tossing a little popper to bluegills. Heck, I still like to do that! Its been fun for me to spend one on one time teaching them something that I love to do and watching them progress at each time on the water. Its always an adventure! Good Luck.
