If you're trying to attach the tippet to the leader with a blood knot, I suggest using a double or triple surgeons knot, much easier.

The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation, unless they fly fish... with apologies to Thoreau

I like the Orvis Tippet Knot. It's a lot like the surgeons knot. In my experience it's stronger, but still quick and easy to tie.

There is a little tool called a "Cinch Tool Knot Tier" that I use to tie surgeon's knots. It's a little brass tool that takes some of the finger fumbling out of it, runs about $10-$12. You can also use it to tie Clinch knots very simply, and improved clinch knots if you think about it a little. I really like it for joining tippet and for tying on tiny flies, and with wet hands and line, sometimes it is nice to have something else to control the line with.

LRO may stock it, but it isn't in their online catalog. But you can actually tie with gloves on, so in my book, that is a pretty good tool to have along. You can tie a surgeons knot in about ten seconds if you practice a little. It comes with instructions for several knots, a couple of which are useful.

If I think about it, I think I can see how to use it for an Orvis knot, too. I may try that.

After fishing for 40 years, I was always a little put off by gadgets like knot tying aids, but as much tying as you do fly fishing, this one is worth it. I can get by without it, but it is easier with it.

Any of the above knots will be fine, the best advice you could hear is practice, practice, practice. Don't wait until you're out in the water watching them feed and try to tie that knot. It'll drive you nuts.
May you fish more than you wish for.
