Default My FIRST (and 2nd) GSMNP Trout!!!

Well today was the day. Got up this morning about 5am, and headed to the park. Wanted to scout out the Elkmont area for possible fishing later this year. Early to mid fall. Fished about an hour or more up o the campground and then up Little River Trail as well. Hmm, was concerned of seeing bears... I didn't but being alone didn't hike in too far. No fish... I am still working on my presentation. Hehe Then headed out to Sugarlands visitor center for break/lunch then drove back out Little River Rd and stopped just up from Metcaf Bottoms and that is where it happened. I am working on my slow stealthy approach... being a Bass fisherman (translated loud Warmwater fisherman) I have to slow down and think... and make myself take a more stealthy approach. Threw a Greenie Weenie for a while... then went to try a Beetle.. and noticed some bugs (hey I ain't far enough along yet to tell you the names...!!) flying around and watched a few fish take them off the surface.... well my good old faithful Adams to the rescue....!!! I switched to a no. 18 Adams and on my second cast BAAM!!!! My first GSMNP Rainbow.... about 6-7"!!! Cool.... stayed/fished my little spot until no more hits... then moved on a litte down the road. And about .25 miles away landed my 2nd Rainbow (hehe about 4-5") for the GSMNP!! It was a blast... and by about noon the tubers were all over the place. I had intended to fish Little River some more... but too many Tubers!! Stopped by LRO and browsed around and bought a few more flies. I finally was able today to watch the fly as it gently landed on the surface and get down how/where to cast and position the line so it looks natural. And of course as soon as it did BAAM!!! FISH ON!!! Thanks to all those in the forums and especially to LRO!!! Keep up the great work!! There never was any doubt but I am hooked on the fly for sure now!!

No way back now. HE HE, Anyway, noticed you are in K-town. Drop me a line if you ever need someone to go with. Probably will head to the Hiwassee next Saturday, unless we get some rain.

    Talking Congrats

Glad you caught your first trout in the Smokies Fishingjunky. I got hooked on flyfishing for trout when I caught my first brook trout in the rocky mountains of Colorado. My only problem has been that I have lived in Florida and now West TN so I have had to travel a good distance to fish in the Smokies. Hopefully, that will change in the near future so I can keep the dust off my fly rods.

I'm in a similar situation...I got hooked last year up in Virginia, on brookies, and I live in Louisiana. It's beyond addicting - I'm actually thinking of buying a chunk of land somewhere within reasonable driving range of the mountains.

    Default addiction

Trout fishing is an addiction....there should be a treatment center somewhere. Of course no one wants a cure! Except maybe the spouses of the addicted trout junky!

Ha, ha, my loving wife sees it as an opportunity to get me out of her hair for a few hours.

I'm not just trout addicted, I'm fly fishing addicted. Unfortunately, the Smokeys are about 5 hours south of me so I can't just drive up in the park after work. Have to hit a local tailwater (Brookville Tail Water in Indiana) for the closest trout fishing. But nothing is like catching wild trout in the mountains.

Ok, I'll do it sometime. Hmm, it was a great day Sunday for me. I am so hyped up that I got the presentation down.... well casting/drifting the fly/line and how to/where in the riffles. Cool. I have never fished the Hiwassee and my Father-in-law and I were discussing doing that sometime. It is too hot for him and myself unless REAL early in the park, and they are running 2 generators nonstop it seems on the Clinch. On the Hiwassee do you wade...? or drift/float? I hear it is VERY big. Or well wide.

I wade when they running one generator or less. When they do two it's only possible to wade at a few select spots and with caution. Hiwassee has the most available wading access in TN. Check out Don Denney's web site hiwassee.net it has all the information you need.

Ok, thanks for the info tennswede I am really looking forward to fishing the Hiwassee and that will be great info. Of course I was going to search the forums here and ask at LRO for advice. And then also of course google "hiwassee" Thanks again.
