It's been a few years since I was there but the cost for a week of fishing, not including airfare was about $4,000. That was fishing the Patagonia as well as some of the mountain fjords. I stayed at an outfitter (Rio Azures) that was pretty much all inclusive (meals, lodging, etc). They charged about $75 for flies but give a credit of $2.00 for everyone returned prior to departure. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and helpful which made the trip worth it.

There's a lot of wonderful mountain fly fishing in Chile that's much less expensive... but you have to speak Spanish and/or German. See Haig-Brown's Fisherman's Winter... the fishing is still there.... you just have to work on it.

Also, remember, the rule of law does not universally apply in Latin America. As someone that was born and raised down there I speak from experience. Most times you are absolutely fine... but do tell the US Embassy you are in country and when you plan to leave!!! Then do the courtious thing and notify them when you leave. That way you don't just disappear.....

    No, I'm not being melodramatic.....
