    Default SMBBSH for winter

Is there a recipe out there that tells how to tie a smbbsh or do you have to order them? Does LRO carry them? Also what flies are producing this time of year, we're planning a trip and were hoping to fish with the famed "smbbsh" but dont know whats working this time of year. Any info will help, thanks.

The SmokyMountainBlackbirdSofthackle is an emerger type fly and it is not as good in the deep winter when there are no flies hatching out. You really need to be fishing the heavier nymphs very close to the bottom as slow as you can fish them, to get anything to strike when the water is this cold. I don't give the recipe out;but if you will be at the next Flytying event that I will be tying in, at LROs, I will show how it is tied. I will be tying again on the 23rd of February. At this time of the year you need to focus on heavily weighted nymphs or very small emerger patterns like the BWO. I wish you luck on your trip and I hope to see you at the upcoming flytying event.

    Default Black Soft-Hackle

All you need is some black dubbing and some over-sized flimsy black feather to make the soft hackle. Sometimes in the winter the little black stones come off and you can fish them in the film on a greased leader to within 6" of the fly. I often use a tuft of yarn about 18" from the fly to be sure I see the takes. If you see trout slashing at the surface on a cold day, that may be the ticket. About a 16 to 18 on a 2xl hook.

Black hackle, don't even need to tie in a tail.

    Merry Christmas!
