Default What i hate!!!!

Is knowing what fish are hitting but not having the right tackle. Good morning all, I was fishing the Caney from my buddies boat on saturday between one generator and two in the later afternoon. A shad kill was happening, dying/dead 2-3inch fish all over the surface. Boom, fish hitting on top everywhere, some of them being big mouth billy browns. Alas, not a fly in my box would work. Anyone have any patterns they have thrown in these circumstances with success?!?

If you want to buy me a plane ticket, I'll be glad to bring my streamer boxes and show you which ones work... Seriously, that may be my favorite fishing on the Caney. It can be tough interesting the fish in an imitation when there are so many naturals floating down the river. I would see if Byron has any Puglisi Shad in the correct color and size combination.

Also, I know David Perry of Southeastern Fly has been experimenting for years on this shad kill and has developed some great techniques to target this exact situation. If you want to have someone show you some killer techniques badly enough you might see if he is available for a trip...

Here's a weighted streamer I tie that I have done well on during shad times, both with trout and stripers...

The streamer David pictured should work well. I use a size 6 weighted White Wooly Bugger with crystal flash in the tail and the body that is medium- pearl white chennile, with all the sparkle in this pattern, it emualtes the flash/sparkle of the scales of the real shad in the water. I have had success in both situations by letting it drift like a dead shad and stripping it like a live one.
