Default Missouri Trout .... closer to St. Louis

Howdy again everyone!

Question:

Has anybody out there fished any of the trout "parks" in Missouri. Its looking like I may be making a trip to St. Louis early September. It looks like there are a few spots to fish within 2 - 3 hours. Anybody been out there? I was also noticing a stream called Mill Creek for wild trout. Any thoughts? I don't think I'll have time to head to the Ozarks.

Thanks All!
Dude

Hey dude, welcome *

I lived in St. Louis for about a year last year and fished the parks several times. There are two decent fly shops in town ,both on Manchester, about a mile a part that could give you the latest scoop on the parks. Feather-craft and T. Hargroves. My favorite park within a couple of hours was Montauk, near Salem Missouri. You can overnight at the lodge pretty cheap, too.
For wild trout the North Fork of the White river is hard to beat. It's a little further, but the folks at the River of Life Farm are great people. Here's a couple links that helped me out when I had to get out of town. *

Hey dude,

I've got a book called "Fly Fishing for Trout in Missouri", by Chuck Tryon. Pretty appropriate, huh? *
It does list Mill Creek, in Phelps county. Interstate 44 west to exit 179 south through Newburg. Right on Hwy P. 3 miles to Mill Creek recreation area. You might wanna pick up the book at Feather-Craft. It's nice just to read about the streams, *8-) even if you don't make it to all of them.

Good Luck

For trout streams close to StL. *Check out Blue Springs Creek, Mill Creek, for wilder fish. *I would avoid Meramec Springs State Park, However below the park on Meramec River (stocker bows and browns with the chance of some big browns) can fish good if you beat the aluminum hatch. *Look for Cardiac and Suicide accesses or pay to park in Meramac and walk out side the park to fish. *

If you don't mind driving a bit further you should definately hit up the Current River, fish the trophy sections. *Tricos in the morning, Caddis in the evening and nymphs/buggers in the middle of the day. *As well as hoppers, beetles and ants. *It is not uncommon to catch 15 inch plus browns on the current. *Look for Baptist camp access, Cedar Grove and Parker Hollow (tuff to find though). *The Current can out fish the North Fork of the White most days.

Check out www.ozarkchronicles.com or send me a message and I'll give you detailed directions. *I grew up in Rolla, MO and those are my home waters. *I've also got some maps of the Current on my blog (listed below).

definately stay away from Meramac Spring unless you are using a spinning real and dough bait. some of the wild blue ribbon areas have some nice trout in them. as far as the state parks i personally recommend bennett spring state park in Lebanon. it's under 3 hours from STL. i was there a couple of weeks ago and caught plenty. Glo balls and john deeres never fail. As far as fly shops in STL, definately go to T Hargroves. this is a great fly shop. Tom will not steer you wrong.
