I am finally getting to make it to Troutfest this year and plan to do a little fishing beforehand. Besides the usual small stream Parachute Adams, EHC, Stimi, etc., does anyone have any suggestions for what flies to bring? Will terrestrials like ants or green weenies be a factor by then? Will the yellow flies of summer (yellow sallies, sulphurs) be more in play then as well?
Any tips appreciated. Thanks, Jed Green |

Jed,
Yellow is already pretty much in full swing up in the mountains... saw several yellow stones flying around down low yesterday afternoon while out on the water. I think with what you mentioned you already have a good grasp on what to be throwing. FYI.. I did use a magic beetle after the rains last week and was getting takes. Always better after the rain but will certainly pick up as a good pattern choice as we move into June/July/August. As long as we have good weather I think the fishing will continue to be very productive when Troutfest roles around later this month... Tight Lines, |

Like tnflyfisher said, yellow is good pretty much from now until fall. Yellow Stimulator, Mr. Rapidan, Yellow Sally, and Neversink Caddis are all pretty good bets. Green Weenies and even Pink Weenies can be productive as a dropper, especially at the higher elevations. And I've always had good luck with bushy Wulff style flies like a Thunderhead or Irresistible or even a Royal Wulff. Throw in a couple of Haystacks and some EHCs in various colors and you'd have a real good start for the mountains.

Add some Light Cahills and also some ant patterns...

Do you check Byron's and Daniel's daily reports? They have recommendations for flies to use.

David,
What is your favorite ant pattern? There are so many out there that it gets crazy trying to pick one or two. Thanks for the replies. Jed |

I don't know if it will help, but I saw some really small dark brown grasshoppers along the river the other day...maybe size 14 with dark and light brown legs...might give you a shot at a big one if you toss it over something deep.
