Tying Challenge: Week 3

I like more impressionistic flies.
Hook: #14 TMC 100
Thread: Black 6/0 UNI-thread
Body: Midge Diamond Braid (Red, Black or Chartreuse) covered by 2mm Black Foam
Hackle: Brown or Black
Overwing/Indicator: Since I'm blind I usually tie in a small piece of white or yellow foam so I can see the fly on the water.

This time of year ants are so well liked that I carry a small box with nothing but 5 or 6 ant patterns. I carry foam ones, dubbed ones, hard bodied ones, and winged ones in a couple different colors and sizes. This is a new pattern I found when I was tying up some ants for my son to take to WY on his NOLS course next week.

Hook: 102y sz13 (yes they come in odd sizes)
Thread: Uni 8/0
Body: Coated with Clear Cure Goo
Legs & Scapes: Leg Stuff from Flycraft/ it's Black polypropylene monfilament. I think lacquer coated thread would work just as well


*clean your tying area before using Clear Goo! Every little speck of dust and fiber will stick too it!

Not really all that hard to tie. It takes about 10 minutes to tie the fly and apply the first coat of clear goo. Then a couple of minutes to dry the clear goo, and another couple to apply the 2nd clear coat and even it out. I'm not a real fast tier anyway, most flies take me about 10 minutes to tie. I think if I tied a couple dozen I could speed up the process, but I tie to relax. I'm not in a hurry or tying to try and make money.
