Tying Challenge: Week 5

Just now getting around to adding something to week 5.
I usually fish something like Walter Babb's candy fly with a tellico nymph as a dropper.





I also like to fish Thunderheads sometimes. This is one that Hugh Hartsell tied for me at one of the LRO saturday morning tying shows. I wanted to post it becuase its the best segmented body w/ dubbing that i've seen. I think the tail might have gotten crushed a little in the box I keep it in.

I'll jump in. I don't usually fish dropper rigs in the Park -- I usually just go dry or fish a nymph. Never really saw the need to use both there.

More often than not, it seems that I'm using a Stimulator in the mountains. Here's a few other dries I like to use:

March Brown


Yellow Sally



For nymphs it's hard to go wrong with a Tellico if you wanted to use a dropper.

I fish the Upper Colorado River quite a bit and here's a few combos that are deadly out there.

Royal Wulff and a Chama Chicken



Another great set-up is this Adams hybrid that I tie with deerhair tail and peacock thorax with brown hackle in a size #12-14. Tip that with a #18 X-Caddis



You can't ever go wrong with a hopper either. Tip that with a Adams Hybrid (above) in a #16 or a small Wulff.

Thanks - it's your basic pattern.

In the Smokies I find myself using a stimulator more in lieu of the Yellow Sally. I don't know why, but I usually do better with it.
