So that bug was a Hex. Now I know

Killer Bee? Do you see many of those? Nice pic. I noticed lots of bees but don't think I've seen that before.

Thanks for posting!

Ducky...I think you are referring to the Bee Killer? Yeah, those seem to be pretty sparse and they are bad for our bees and plants.

As for the big Hex...you will see those more around mid-summer (night-early AM). Some of my buddies have spotted some Hex mating balls at night to throw to...But, I have not witnessed one yet.

I inserted below a nymph pattern that works for them. Basically; it is just a big pheasant tail. I add the big eyes and some soft hackle for action. I tight line it without an indicator to deep pools and give it subtle bumps. This was the first one I fished and it got chewed up pretty good that morning.

Lots of intersting pics.

Professional s tell me Benthics is a generic term meaning bottom (or substrate) dwelling organisms, and That benthos consists of not only insects but molluscs (snails and mussels), crustaceans, aquatic worms and more.

Technically i think the pictures represent larval, pupal and adult macroinvertebrates from the Clinch (along with a few assorted terrestrials) - nice praying mantis, tiger swallow-tail and saddleback caterpillar).

Joe,
Thanks for your input. I tried to represent the pictures in a generalized category so that I did not get the page too busy or too segmented for viewers who are not fly fisherman.

My intent is to help people be aware of the beautiful ecosystem we have around and on the river. Also; I want to make others aware of how fragile the river is too pollution and other unnatural influences.

I suspect that there will be condos lining the river in the next few years. I can only hope that conservation will supersede the all mighty dollar...who knows...?
