Looks like not too many go fly fishing in/around Hilton Head!
I am headed there 1st week in April, haven't a clue what to
do abt trying to fly fish. Have a stiff 9' 7wt that I use for central
Kentucky smallies, occasional bucket mouth, and will take it with
me. Byron, pls let me know what/how you did in FEB. Am not
adverse to being guided, but would like to learn a little abt wading
on my own as well. Still looking to get to LRO and Abrams this
winter, but as you can see, Spring Break with Mama is H.H. SC.

Watson, *The weather was cold in Hilton Head so we decided not to fish. *Just relaxed. *Hilton Head is a beautiful place with a lot of good restaurants. Low Country Outfitters is the fly shop there. *We've met them and used their guide service. *They can also show you where to fish if you don't use a guide. Sorry I can't give you a better report. *I would hire a guide. I would also call Low Country and maybe buy a map from them. *

HW3,

I was down there last summer for the 1st time in about 15 years. I always remembered fishing in the Nature Preserve Ponds and catching tons of largemouth and bluegill/shellcrackers. I tried it again and the same fish are still there but they are much, much bigger. And for that matter, so are gators that inhabit the ponds !

We were using traditional tackle (aka Bass Tackle from the Dark Side) because I didn't have my fly rod and caught several large largemouth. My biggest was 9 LBs. I caught it on a popper. When I go this year, I'll have an 8wt with me. Any fly that pops and or looks like a like a minnow will catch fish. A guy from Louisville, KY was there that morning also (it was Memorial Day) and caught 3 fish over 6lbs and lost one that was well over 10lbs.

The best part of the deal is that hardly anyone fishes those ponds. If you go, be sure to fish the pond that has the little 'Gator boat in it. I has the most cover in the water with weeds and what not. It also has, as evidenced by the tour boat, the biggest gators. So, when you go to land a fish, I would advise not reaching down and lipping the fish. Just drag it up the bank a little ways to avoid any unpleasant encounters and earning the nickname of Lefty! Flyfishing already has a guy with that name.

Just ask anyone down there where the Nature Preserve is. It's real easy to find. Have fun.

Brandon

We travel to Hilton Head several times a year, but I've not had much experience saltwater fly fishing there. There is another outfitter besides Low Country, they are Bay Street Oufitters in nearby Beaufort. They conduct a regular Redfish school that deals with finding, casting to, and catching redfish. This sounds like a good idea for beginners and I intend to give it a try this year.
