Default Caney Shad Kill

I hit the Caney for a couple of hours late this afternoon. There were lots of dead shad in the shallows and the fish have been gorging themselves. I caught several football shaped fish. The last fish of the day was spitting up half digested shad in large quantities, losing a lot of girth in the process. Hopefully the fish will put on a lot of weight rather quickly with the good eats...

You should have been there Sunday, largest shad kill i've ever seen in all the years i fished the Caney, i'm glad they're back to taking a few flies.
My bud is still reeling over that brown he caught, i would be to.

Grumpy, I wish I had been there, I've always wanted to see a big shad kill while it was actually happening... It wouldn't be bad catching a HOG like that either... Does the Caney normally have much of a shad kill or is this fairly unusual?

It was the largest one i had ever seen on the Caney, patches of fish everywhere for the first two miles below the dam & there were still plenty of them all the way to Betty's on the surface & below, we didn't go any further downstream.
I showed your pic to a few folks yesterday, they couldn't believe it, i guess ya just got to be there huh?

Hey guys! I was down on the caney last thursday. I got there about an hour after they shut the generators off expecting to fish a shad kill myself. There wasn't alot happening at that time. Fish where honed in on some little black midges hatching out. It was my first trip on the river this year and though it was a beatiful day "blue bird sky" and all, the fishing seemed a little slow. Then there where alot of anglers on the water wich I wasn't expecting on thursday afternoon. Caught one nice rainbow down by the dam in probably 8 inches of water on a parachute style black adams size 18 with a black and white zebra midge size 22 dropper. Didn't see many anglers catching much but I'll have to say it was a sight to walk down stream and see someone casting a fly rod every 50 yards or so. Met an older 70'ish gentlemen who kind of old man of the river as I was packing up. Said he caught " several" on same midge pattern I was using. I must have been fishing it wrong or something. Well, I hope you guys all catch a 20 incher. Sounds like the smokies are starting to turn on. See ya there!
Chad
