Default Whitetop

I fished this stream many years ago and had great success even in my early years of flyfishing. The "hot" fly then was a white wulff, although any buggy looking fly should work still because they are mostly opportunistic feeders.

About 4 years ago we took a bicycle ride down the creeper trail (14 miles), and I wish I had had a flyrod with me. Many bridges with access as well as along the stream. I would think that there is not much pressure on those fish except close to the highway. There is a great public campground just past Demascus if your interested run by VA parks and rec..

Good luck,
Flat Fly'n

Plenty of pulloffs along the road with good fishing. Try hiking up from the first parking area on the right. I usually go about a mile up as I fish and then walk back down. Never have been disapointed.

I fish WT often, I use wooley buggers and various nymphs. It can be a great creek. You just need to get off the road, too much traffic and people. Go up into the spec regs areas. THere is where you will find the wild fish and pretty sites. But if you need any more PM me I will be glad to share.

CPR= catch, photo, & release!

Well, Well...I cant honestly say I know anything about Whitetop Laural.....im kidding. Ok, if youre a flyfisherman then youll want to fish the special reg area, as was mentioned, above Mouth of Straight Branch and below Taylors Valley. There are some other waters up and down the river that dont get much attention but stick to this stretch for simplicity. The fish arent that selective on nymphs...but they can be on dries! Dont leave your small dries at home. Medium Wooly Buggers work well. I dont think youll be disappointed w/ this stream! (Although some people are....)
Who knows? Youll probably catch me up in the special reg area..Ill be the one following a yellow dog.....or takling to a cute blonde (see "Storytellin'").

Talking Whitetop

I would stay away from that stream, bears and rattlesnakes everwhere, come on down and fish the park instead

I've fished Whitetop Laurel twice, most recently about 2 years ago. I like the whole setting including the town of Damascus. You can hike the Virginia Creeper Trail and jump into the stream where you want to. The fishing is good and it's a beautiful area. I would put this on my list of places to fish if I were you.
