Fresh to Salt

Hello Everyone,

Do any of you guys make it down to Garden City, SC? If so do you ever get a chance to flyfish and where have you tried? I was considering using some shrimp patterns since I caught a bucket full with a cast net last fall. Any other suggestions on flies and rod/reel combos that will keep my wife from killing me?

Ben,
A Temple Fork Pro series 10ft 8wt w/ an Orvis reel would probably satisfy a budget. You could probably do both and get a line for around $400 or less.

The only thing to consider before purchasing a 10ft. rod is whether you will be fishing from a boat. While a 10 might be helpful wading, I would definitely suggest a 9 footer. It will fit in a flat's boats rod tubes, perform better in the boat and you certainly don't loose any casting ability. I never use rods longer than 9ft (many a little shorter) whether wading or fishing from the boat.

Well, I kind of figured if Ben was a little worried about the wife then he was looking for something within an acceptable budget. Since he's budget conscious he's probably less likely to be going out in a boat. As far as that goes, I've been in flats boats before and I haven't had trouble with 10 footers. 10 footers are excellent for wading and kayaking in saltwater, freshwater too, for that matter.

Personal preference, I guess.
