The various *winters* coincide with what is blooming at the time. So, this is Dogwood Winter. Blackberry winter will be a cold spell that occurs when the blackberry brambles are blooming. Least wise, that's what I've always known. ![]() Paula |

Ok...then it must be "blackberry winter" down here now, because they're all in bloom right now - in fact, I made a conscious effort to leave a few of them intact in the backyard the other day when I was cutting the grass - I love blackberries; when I was a kid, we munched on them as we fished.
There were a few reports of frozen precipitation around here...again, it's hard to believe it's April. However, by next weekend, it will be in the 80s here again...speaking of which, if the forecast holds, we'll be up there - I want the girls to have a shot at catching a "real" trout, particularly on a dry. |

As Paula said, these springtime cooldowns coincide with specific, local, natural events. Next up will be Blackberry Winter which coincides with the local balckberry crop blooming. Then we'll have another brief cooldown when the whippoorwills start singing in the evenings. I've heard mention of another one - Stooksbury Winter - but I have yet to find any specifics about it.

i know the whole stooksbury winter thing's kinda funny, but if you seriously want to figure it out, that article was printed in the news sentinel, written by carson brewer I believe and is archived at the UT library in a collection of his articles. it is not accessible online, but if you'd call the library I bet they'd let you read it. also, the news sentinel may have it archived.
