Post Hike in Elkmont trip report Wednesday 10-15-08

I thought I would kick off my first post as a trip report from my fishing adventure on Wedneday above Elkmont. I have been lurking on these boards for several months now and finally joined the other day. I live in Knoxville and am an avid hiker and whitewater enthusiast. I have just taken up fly fishing this year. I know I'm getting better because I'm finally catching fish. I want to give a big thanks to those that post here, they have aided me. Anyway here is the trip treport:

A buddy and I got a late start out of Knoxville (10:15) and stopped by LRO on the way up to get a few flies. We soon made it to the trail head for Jake's creek above Elkmont. We decided to walk in here so we wouldn't be tempted to fish like if we walked in the Little River trail. It's hard to pass up a good fishing spot. When we arrived at the Little River 2.5 miles later we headed for the stream. Within 10 minutes I landed my first fish. A nice rainbow a little over 8 inches. I released him back and within 5 minutes I got another. A bit smaller, but a decent rainbow none the less. My buddy gave me a look of dissappointment, but he too soon landed a fish. We fished on for a half mile a few hundred yards above the next bridge where we finally called it a day. I caught 4 (2 of which were keepers yet released). I also had one fly off the hook mid air and had many more hits that didn't result in a catch. My buddy caught 4 also. We walked out a half hour before dusk via the Little River trail to make a loop. We saw atleast 6 turkeys around the abadoned buildings hiking back to car. A nice beautiful day in the Smokies for sure! Picture available at: http://www.kodakgallery.com/Slidesho...Uy=zdwm03&Ux=0

Have a great day,
James Locke aka duckypaddler

Nice report! I would like to camp at the backcountry campsites there and fish for the slam someday.

First of all, welcome to the board and to the obsession, James. It is, indeed, a great place for information, especially for the novice fly fisher. You're doing well for a new guy if you're catching fish right now. Sometimes the Smokies are gracious to the newbie as they were to me last year when I first started. Keep up the good work - look forward to many more reports from you.
