Default Odd day on the Clinch - 10/26

I spent a few hours below the wier dam this morning, starting a bit after sunrise.

My go-to fly up there is a slightly modified Pheasant Tail in a 16, but that didn't get much attention at first. The first odd thing was having a trout hit my indicator (an orange Palsa float) so hard that I fought him for a little bit before he came up and spit out the float. A few casts later, and I had a refusal rise to my indicator. So almost as a joke, I tied on a big (size 10) Madam-X as an indicator fly, and on the second cast had a decent sized brown nail the fly hard.

OK, so that's weird. That's only one of a handful of times that I've ever had a fish hit a dry on the Clinch. And it's the first time I've ever caught a brown trout on a dry up there. Another hour passed, and still nothing on the PT, and no more "topwater" action with the Madam-X. I changed up and put a size 20 PT on, had a nice strike on the first cast, executed a long-distance release, and then nothing again for quite a while. More fly changes - Copper Johns, Hare's Ears, Zebra Midges, RS-2's. Nothing.

Then the sun came out. I switched back to the original PT, and ended up catching 3 more browns and missing 3 other fish. I ended at about 1 with a chunky brookie (man how they're growing!) that had the softest take on that PT. Gave the PT to a guy coming down to fish, gave another to his son.

Interesting day. Nothing really moving until the sun hit the far side of the wier. However the spin fishermen on the dam were flat hammering them in the chutes.
