are there water moccasins in the smokeys?

No, they are not found this far north. You can find them in Western TN, and from Calhoun, GA south roughly. They do not mind swift water, nor do they mind cool water, but our winters are a little bit too cold for them here. Plenty of water snakes, which are nastier in tempermant then Cottonmouths IMO, and far more plentiful.

I've never had any issues with water snakes but I have had more than one cottonmouth come after me. You must be living right if a cotton mouth gives you less trouble than a water snake.
