Default Walker Prong 7/17-7/18

I fished Walker Prong last weekend, a couple hours all together. I did OK, not great but OK. It seemed like 4:30 pm was a magic time. Both days at 4:30 I would start catching fish, and this would last for about an hour, then shut down to nothing. Something strange is going on, out of the 12-14 fish caught only one was a Brookie and fellow I was fishing with caught another 4 or 5 and they were all Rainbows. For the past few years it has been almost all Brookies up there. Any thoughts on the change?

Vern,

Here's my take on it. Two years ago when I began fly fishing early in the year, I was catching about 50/50 bows and brookies down in the gorge of the WPLP. By last year, I fished Walker Camp Prong above the Alum Cave Bluff trailhead and caught all bows. It's my belief that as water levels went down with the drought and water temps went up, the bows migrated upstream to the cooler water (as, most likely, the brookies did as well). The brookies still haven't quite moved back down to the gorge and the bows have stayed up higher into this year. Don't know if that will change over time as we are coming out of the drought this year.

My two cents.....

BTW, glad to have had you in East Tennessee - hope you enjoyed yourself.
