I got an interesting e-mail from my mentor,Rick Blackburn, who has been living near Boseman, MT for the last several years and fishing the Madison in the winter.
Rick said he seldom uses split shot any more. Instead he puts TWO 3/16 gold tungsten beadheads on his nymphs for winter fishing. Plus lead wire on the front half. Rick still fishes the same two nymphs I mentioned, plus trying a Whitlock red fox squirrel nymph. And get this: He is nymphing with an 11.5 foot 6/7wt rod and a "thing-a-ma-bobber" strike indicator. I quote: "It's so deadly that it should be illegal for nymphing." Food for thought and I'm sure it is worth listening to the master. I just thought I should share Rick's latest technique.
