Hazel Creek Question

How many stream crossings are there on Hazel with no bridge or foot-log from the lake up to the last campsite (#82 Calhoun)?

I do not recall any non-bridge crossings up to Calhoun, but it has been a few years since I was up that way. Unless a bridge is out, you should be fine.

There are no wet crossings up to Calhoun.

Birdman, care to share when you plan on going? I'm planning on the middle of April, but I'm not going as far as #82.

I forgot that there is a "small spring branch" right before the Cold Spring Gap Trail. I had to consult the Hiking Trails Of The Smokies book to verify.

I plan to venture over there sometime during the summer.

Yeah it's after 82 on the upper part of hazel where there are a lot of crossings about 12 or more. The first one is the deepest as it usually goes. Last April it was about up to my waist but they get shallower after that but most all are true fordings and not rock hops. 82 looked like a really nice spot. The campsite was on either side of the trail. The side closest to hazel creek down a little bank looked the prettiest. Even had an old beat up picnic table down there that I remember.

Crockett - Thanks for the great info! One of the guys I'm going with read somewhere that the Calhoun site was not a good place to stay. I'm glad to hear it's a good spot.
