Default Yellowstone

Different stokes for different folks….

It’s hard to beat the Smokies, where my good friend and mentor, taught me to fly fish for trout.

But just got back from a short trip to Yellowstone, my 5th to fish. Not a large number of fish, but each and every fish was memorable in its own way. Mostly Cuts in the 12” to 17” size….my last fish of the trip was pushing 20”.

But it was not the size of the fish, nor the incredible beauty of the place. Rather it’s the trill or sight fishing with dries. Waiting as patiently as possible to see a natural taken, watch for a repeat, match the natural, find the best position for the cast. Make the cast…..watch the drift find the exact riffle etched in my short term memory……..See my fish….yes….my fish… slowly rise to inspect and then to gulp the fly (the fly that only moments ago had been in my pocket). Play my fish, not too much, and in most cases, kneel down and release him without every taking him out of the water.

Don’t get me wrong….I am frequently jealous of the number and size of fish that my nymphing brothers get to hand….but for me, sight fishing with dries can’t be beat.
