Default The old man and the boy

My uncle James loved to fish, introduced me to it as a small boy growing up here in east Tennessee. One thing he told me long ago is something I think about often as I fish the streams and lakes of east Tennessee.

We were out one day in his boat leisurely motoring upstream to a favorite cove of his enjoying a beautiful spring morning. As we rounded the point at the entrance to the cove there sat two other gentlemen in their boat fishing. Uncle James eased the boat on across the cove and anchored just upstream near the bank where he proceeded to open his thermos of coffee, pour himself a cup and relax. I knew enough by then to know that fish could be spooked by human presence and by lures churned through the water around them so I asked uncle why we weren't heading to another spot as these guys will have already fished this spot out. He looked at me and said, "Son, it ain't been fished until I fish it!"
