What materials are used for the tail and body of the Yellow Palmer? The picture in the online catalog looks like yellow floss.

FLYFSN,
I have always used yellow Superfine Dubbing for the body and brown hackle. I've tied them with brown hackle tails and some without tails. This fly is very popular on the North Carolina side of the Park and has been for years. Some tyers use grizzly hackle. I doubt if it really matters. I think Superfine would float better than floss. Thanks for the information on the Yellow Palmer. I plan on fishing the North Carolina side of the park the first seven days of May.

The way I first saw the pattern tied was with a mixture of brown and grizzly spade hackle fibers. Now days I like to use 4 or 5 pieces of Moose body hair. Moose hair floats better and is more durable than hackle fibers. Elk is another is good choice of you don't have any Moose

I tied some with the Moose hair. They do look better.
Thanks |

Flyman!
I'm a returning fly tyer after several decades, hence my question: Do your use a dubbing loop when you use the elk hair on a Palmer? |

Hans,
I think that Flyman is referring to the use of moose or elk hair in the tail of the yellow palmer. |

Flyman should know. He lives in the land of the Yellow Palmer. I'll use moose next time.

Hans,
Sorry about that, I did mean to use the moose or elk for the tail. I do that on several patterns that call for hackle fibers for the tail. Hair is much more durable and floats better. FLYFSN, Want to tie a quick one, try using Uni Yarn for the body ![]()
