Advice on fishing the Smokies

I was wondering if any could give me some tips on fishing inside the park. I really want to catch a wild brook, but my experience has been in the Caney Fork and the Clinch River.

Any suggestions on where to go and fly sizes.

Shouldn't really matter where you go or what you size you use. My Favorite tends to be an Orange Palmer starting around the middle of April. If you are speaking of the Caney Fork of the Tuckaseegee then you should have had pretty good success. Wild brook are pretty abundant anywhere above the Sugar Fork church. Anywhere you go inside the park is s pretty good bet above 3500 feet.

Sure fire brookie waters are the upper ranges of the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River up 441 towards Newfound Gap. At the Chimney Tops trailhead, the river splits into Walker Camp Prong that continues up along the road and through the Alumn Cave Trailhead to Mt. Leconte and above and Road Prong which follows the Chimney Tops trail for a while before taking off up the mountain. Both of these branches are lively brookie waters.

As to flies, Parachute Adams #16 (regular now and in the fall and yellow during the summer) and yellow stimulators are good bets. The water is probably a little cool up that way at this point but should be warming up within the next few weeks.

Other folks have their own favorite brookie waters and can chime in.

I'll second west prong of the little pigeon river. That's where caught my first brook tout. I like a stimulator for brook trout.
