Since it costs so much to drive these days, I've been trying some alternatives to trout fishing. It isn't as much fun to me but still a blast... Today was easily the best day I've had fishing for warm water species yet this year. I lost track of how many fish I caught and all the fish pulled hard. The fly of the day was a fly I tie (dunno what its called or if it has a name, anyone know?) that is simply a gold beadhead and a little extra lead wire for weight, then a marabou tail and the body is just the rest of the marabou feather wrapped on down the hook. Simple but deadly... Here's a couple pictures from today...

PlateauAngler, Nice fish. I know that spot well. 20 minute away. Glad to see the fish have turned on. Any skipjack herring(shad)? Hope to run into you someday on the gravel bar. Monk

Monktrout, I didn't catch any skipjack although there are a bunch of some type of shad/herring just under the dam but not hitting anything I've tossed in there. I've been wanting to catch a striper somewhere down there but haven't yet although I've seen a few fish rolling. Any tips on how to go after those fish?

PlateauAngler, I have spent some time trying to catch stripers on that stretch of river. I caught one 8pounder about 2 years ago. Also caught a 15lb drum. Plenty of skipjack over the last 3 years as well as white bass, and large mouths. Generally I use a white and chartreuse clouser sz4. I notice that early in the season they seem to like a smaller fly sz8-10. I also throw all white or all chartreuse. If they are hitting, they are not too particular. I know some guys have caught stripers on a fly after dark or early in the morning. I have had a big one roll on my fly. I hope to get out there this week if I can put together a couple of hours. A friend from Washington state tied some tube flies for me that worked well. My email is forhscc@yahoo.com
