Default Little River report 4/12/08

Let me tell you about my Saturday.

The day started off with a quick stop at Little River Outfitters to pick-up some flies for the day and to see how much rain the area received the night before. I bought some flies, a new fly box, as well as a pair of the Korkers Torrent Shoes. I was eager to begin my trip, so the stop was short and I was soon off to the trail head at Elkmont.

In the backpack, I had a jacket, lunch, and a bladder of Gatorade. The chest pack had 2 fly boxes, and my camera. The shoes, I had just dropped $100 on and wanted to throw them in the picture. Here’s a view from the trailhead at Elkmont.

I stopped to tae a picture of the Little River, which I was going to fish, from the trailhead.

Another picture. I left my fly rod broke down in the pack because I wanted to hike in 3.5 miles before I start fishing and it is so hard to walk past perfectly good water to get to water I have never fished that might not be so good.

You can almost see the trout rising in this pool.

I’ve got to get moving. Time to put the camera away for awhile. After going about 2.5 miles I came across this waterfall just before it flows into the Little River.

A little further up I came to a bridge crossing the river.

I knew I had to be getting close to where I was wanting to drop down into the river and I saw a large live trap to the left of the trail. Bear, hog trap Instantly I heard a noise of something coming out of the thicket to the right. My heart jumped into my throat. Then this doe stepped out and joined me for a minute.

Soon after passing her, I reached my destination. I had planned to start fishing where the bridge crossing is.

I switched out the soles on my new Korkers and rigged up the fly rod. My rod of choice for the day was a cheap Cabelas brand 7’6” 3-weight with a “made in China” Pflueger reel (really need to get on ebay and get me an older one ). Fly choice: 16 parachute Adams. It ended up being the only fly I fished with all day.

Here’s the first run I fished.

I hate fishing in waders so the choice not to pack them in was an easy one. After that first step into the water, I really wished I would have. I definitely won’t be wading in any deeper than my thighs today!!!

Fish on!!! And my feet and legs haven’t even gone numb yet. It’s going to be a good day. I ended up catching lots of these.

It was now noon and I was getting hungry, so I stopped for some shore lunch and to sit in the sun and warm-up.

Then maybe take some pictures of some flowers.

About 3:30 rolled around and I was getting sloppy with my wading, so it was time to head out. I came out of the river just above backcountry campsite 24. There were some backpackers there and you can see they’ve got their food up the bear cables.

I had such a good day I stopped to take some more pictures of flowers.
