I have a few of the older classic Martin reels, I like to use on some glass rods. They are old technology, heavy compared to newer reels but they have a lot of character, and really sing when a fish takes line. These are my favorites:
Martin 67SSA- A clicker pawl with adjustable drag. I have a 7 wt. wulff TT bass line on it matched to a Fenwick Feralite 807 glass rod. ![]() Martin 67A - Another fine click pawl reel that I use all the time on different rods from boo to glass. I use 5-6 wt lines on it. ![]() Please share some of your favorites! |

I use Hardy's unless I am fishing saltwater. My favorite is the Hardy Featherweight. I think they look great on bamboo rods.

While it may not qualify as a true classic for sentimental reasons I love to fish with my Orvis CFOIII.....had tried to baby it from hard use but finally figured that life is too short not to use it....it was also that last gift I received from my Mom before she passed and it adds a little extra meaning to my trips back to her mountains when I can go....

While I've got a couple old Martins and 2 LL Bean Angler models that were relabeled Martins, I truly love old Pflueger Medalists, especially the ones with the round line guide. Built like a tank, work flawlessly, and truly a piece of American flyfishing history. I don't have pics of any right now, but they are my favorite on old or new bamboo.

I only own two reels,a Hardy LRH and a Lamson LP 1.5 light and I consider them classics.Never saw the need for a drag on a trout reel, the click works fine for me,even on smallmouths in lower Abrams creek.I reckon the Hardy is my favorite though,it was the reel I always wanted when I was a kid drooling over a dog eared 1968 Orvis catalog.

The older English reels tend to be a bit beefier, which for cane rods is just perfect to balance them. Of course they also tend to be a bit indestructible which doesn't hurt when you fall down as much as I do......
