Started out around 3:30 just below above the turn off for Elkmont. There were cars and people everywhere, so I figured any open water is good water. Well the water i picked wasn't open. There were some folks that would tube down a 1/4 mile then walk back up and tube down again. They passed by me a few times but seemed to not affect the fishing at all. In fact I continued to catch fish just as soon as the tubes were out of where I wanted to cast. I'm not sure how many I caught..Maybe 25 or so. Only 2 browns, and only 3 over 10 inches. All came on a pheasant tail dropped behind a yellow salley.
Beware! I did notice ALOT of bee (hornet, wasp, whatever) nests in the trees overhanging the water. They were not there 2 weeks ago when I fished this stretch last, so be careful. The nests were only about 5 or 6 feet off the water, perfect for someone to walk into or back cast into.. I also noticed some fish making what looked like beds?? Decent sized fish maybe abot 8-10 inches, and big nests as well, maybe about the size of a car tire. They were in the shallows in mostly still water. Any ideas of what in the world they were?? |

You guys are rough on ole 2wt! i would guess that the reds you saw were chub suckers or "horny heads". I have caught them on nymphs, and the spawning males had bright pink about them. I can't remember what time of year it was though.
