Hey; I've just signed up. I live in Birmingham, and my fly fishing experience has been all warm water--bass, bream, etc. I'm just starting in the Smokies (Abrams last weekend), and will be backpacking in to some smaller water. I've been using a 4-piece 8.5 ft. 5 weight for several years, but wonder if I need something smaller. I know fishermen don't usually have opinions, but I'm interested in thoughts.

I use a 9' 5wt on a regular basis in the Park. Abrams is a pretty good size piece of water (by GSMP standards) and the 8'6" will be fine.
I do have a 7'6" 3wt that I use mainly because I like the rod and it's fun to fish that little short light rod on the streams. However, I wouldn't go out and buy a new rod just for the park if I already had a rod like you described. Of course, while you're in Townsend, stop by LRO, talk with anyone in the shop, take a couple rods out back and cast. I'm sure you'll fine one that you NEED and cannot live without. Should your wife ask, I will deny saying that and ask for written proof. Jeff |

Welcome! That rod should be fine. My personal preference is to have something with a little backbone for throwing heavy nymphs, etc., just in case... On the other hand, if you want an excuse for a new rod, then you definitely need a 3 or 4 wt for fishing in the Park...

Hey, welcome to the LRO board ! Hope you enjoy it. Lots to learn here, its a great source of information and a great place to share what ya know. Fly fishing is one of those things that once you start you cant stop, and when youre not doin it , its what you wanna be doin. Havnt fished the smokie mts. yet, gonna try this August. Best of luck and good fishin to ya!
