Two colors are basically all you need for inshore gulf fishing. Those would be chart./white and red/white. As far as clouser sizes, #2, #4, and #6 flies will serve you well inshore. I would also throw in a couple of bigger clousers in a 2/0.

Thumbs up clousers

Thanks trout assasin, don't know if the bass pro shop here in Nashville carries 'em , might just to have to get 'em down there. Does anyone know of a good fly/tackle shop in the panama city beach area? Thanks again.

I would also grab a couple of gray/white clousers as well. Are you fishing the surf, inshore, offshore, flats? I just got back from Destin and did a little of everything. Let me know and I'll suggest a few other patterns. The problem with clousers is the wind. Not only are they tough to cast in the wind, they'll plumb knock you into next week when you get hit in the back of the head with one.

In the surf, most anything will do but I would start with the Chart./White clouser. However, I would keep gray/white, white/white & chart./pink (i call it tooty frooty) on hand. I would probably stick with size 4 or 6 unless the surf is rough and you need a size 2 to get it down. In a calm surf, any baitfish pattern will work. I also wouldn't hesitate to use a popper like a crease fly. It's like dry fly fishing in the smokies when they hit it. Lot's of fun to watch. Plus, if there is any seaweed, you'll need the top water stuff.

A couple of things to watch out for from my experience, slide your feet to be wary of sting rays. Strip as fast as you can and the longer the better. Also, learn how to tie a loop knot for the baitfish patterns. It will give them a better action.

Also, I always use 20lb. fluorocarbon tippet. These fish aren't leader shy. You also may want to keep some wire tippet handy in case you find blue fish (very teethy). You can handle most fish by the belly and not the lip. I usually carry an old pair of needle nose pliers to get my flies out with. If you get into lots of fish, you may start loosing hair on the clousers. Don't worry...even a few strands of hair will catch these fish.

In the bay, fish smaller flies like 6's. I would have some darker patterns like brown/orange. Try fishing at night under dock lights. In this case, go with white/white patterns with little to no weight. A Polar Fibre fly is a nice fly for the bay. Drop down to 10lb or 15lb fluoro. These fish do get leader shy and spooky.

I hope some of this helps. It's fun when the surf is calm and you get into fish.

Tight lines!

Daniel Mc.
