Not to get too technical here, but the article "the" would be appropriate to describe the "smokie" mountains:
"An article is a word that combines with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun. The three main articles in the English language are the, an and a. An article is sometimes called a noun marker, although this is generally considered to be an archaic term.[1] It is sometimes wondered which part of speech articles belong to. Despite much speculation, articles are not adjectives, as they do not describe nouns; THEY JUST AGREE WITH THEM. " (Wikipedia) One does not go to Grand Canyon (there are places called this), they go to THE Grand Canyon. One does not go to THE Yellowstone National Park, because "THE" does not agree with it ;-) |

Uhm, OK!
Perhaps someone could tell you where to go without using an article? Heavy hittin' with the Wikipedia, there. And the "the" I used was a definite article. Right? Right. So, hope THAT wasn't too technical. ![]() |

JimmyC,
Sorry if I came across as an abrasive individual, I am not. There was some discussion in one of Byrons fishing reports as to weather the Smoky Mountains should be called the THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS or just refer to them as GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS. This was my rationale as to why they should be called THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS. Sorry if I offended you or any one else concerning this matter. |

I should have said THE GREAT SMOKY NATIONAL PARK, not THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS.

It is correct to not have "the" in the title. This is because you do not use articles with proper nouns or names. For this same reason, Byron's store is "Little River Outfitters", not "The Little River Outfitters". Another example: We say "Doctor Smith", not "The Doctor Smith".
